The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
