Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."
