Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
