At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
